GUEST Rooms, Amenities and Rates

The inn has six unique guest rooms all with private baths. Five of the six guest rooms have queen sized beds; the Chatsworth room offers a King bed.  Henley, the first-floor guest room, offers an option for those who wish to avoid stairs.  The Treefalls, Skipton and Chatsworth rooms feature a deep bubble-jet Spa tub. Chatsworth, the largest room guest room, also offers a large private deck and oversized bubble jet tub with separate walk in shower.  Treefalls also has a fireplace for cozy late fall and winter nights, and guests are treated to a lovely view of Cadillac Mountain in the Tan Hill Room.

All guest rooms offer ceiling fans, air conditioning and heat with individual temperature controls, plus windows that open to allow the sea breezes in. In-room amenities include Sony Dream Machine radio/cd alarm clocks with a recharging docks and table lamps with additional integral outlets (plenty of outlets for charging devices). With a nod toward Maine companies, guests enjoy luxurious Cuddledown of Maine bed linen, Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and small in-room gifts from local shops.  In addition, look for eco-friendly bamboo towels, custom designed shampoo, oatmeal soap, and small vials of lip balm to protect your lips from winter’s chill and the drying effects of sea salt and sun. Rooms with spa tubs are stocked with “Innsparations” essential oil bath pillow packs too. A souvenir collapsible water bottle is found in each room to keep guests hydrated on the trails and then easily fit in suitcases too.  

Complimentary parking is available on site; guests leave their keys so cars can be organized as necessary for early departures and dawn trips up the mountain. A huge draw for bikers is the motorcycle-friendly attitude here, with bike washing facilities and code access parking in the inn’s garage 2 minutes away. Guests can also store bicycles here too.  

The inn is located just a few short blocks from Bar Harbor’s downtown area, making Bar Harbor’s shops, restaurants and waterfront easily walkable from Aysgarth Station B&B.  To explore other towns on Mount Desert Island plus Acadia National Park, catch the free Explorer bus, just a few short blocks from Aysgarth Station.  

Complimentary beverages including cold sodas, bottled water, coffee and tea are offered in the dining room 24/7 at Aysgarth Station.  Afternoon snacks are available between 4:00pm and 5:00pm, though they often appear earlier and stay later. If you’re lucky, after dinner grab a Heath Bar Brownie or Lemon Scone after dinner if it didn’t appeal earlier in the afternoon.  

For the guests who want to spend as much time in Acadia as possible, picnic lunches stuffed with yummy homemade goodies and seasonal items to-go may be purchased and To-Go breakfasts can also be arranged for those leaving on early boat trips or needing to make a flight.

Look for a large selection of guides for galleries and museums, hiking and trail maps specific to each season, boating and water activities schedules, brochures, and menus make planning your day’s activities easy, along with tips and advice from your innkeepers who’ll share all their best secret spots.  The inn’s built-in shelves throughout the second floor offer up a virtual library with all genres of books, and guests are encouraged to enjoy any that suit their taste while staying there.

Aysgarth Station B&B rates vary according to the season, and run between $85 - $110 per room in the winter and $125- $175 in the summer (not including 9% Maine rooms and lodging tax). Rates are valid as of February, 2017, but are subject to change.

Common Rooms & Grounds  

Aysgarth Station B&B is on a quiet side street in Bar Harbor, making the front porch a nice place to enjoy a glass of wine or afternoon tea while relaxing in the comfy rockers there.  Additionally, a secret gem is found on the inn’s small 3rd floor deck; it’s a great place for early morning coffee, late night stargazing or simply to sit high in the trees and enjoy the breeze.

The inn’s front parlor provides comfortable, soft seating out of the sun’s rays during the summer, and a cozy fireside retreat in the winter. A table tucked into the parlor’s bay window is the ideal spot to relax with a card or board game, and you’ll find a nice selection of them too.  From time to time you may find Asticou, the innkeeper’s cat, seeking a little attention from guests in the parlor too.  

Adjacent to the parlor is the dining room where breakfast is served at a communal table to encourage conversation and experience sharing. The dining room table is available for guest use after breakfast hours, and guests are often found here enjoying a take-out meal or planning a day’s adventure together.

The dining room is also home to the guest pantry with complimentary 24/7 hot and cold beverage service. Guests are encouraged to brew a hand- blended tea from Bar Harbor Tea Company or sample a freshly brewed Maud’s or Green Mountain coffee from the Keurig machine. Camelbacks and the complimentary Aysgarth Station water bottles can be filled from the filtered water cooler located next to the coffee station. A fresh fruit bowl is always available and surplus breakfast goodies are an additional snacking opportunity throughout the morning.

In addition to cold beverages, fresh cream and milk are available in the guest fridge which can also be used to store guests’ beverages, snacks and packed lunch supplies. An ice maker is located below the fridge for small coolers, cocktails, or both.

Free parking is offered in the inn’s driveway, and free secure motorcycle and bicycle parking is available at the inn’s garage nearby. Town of Bar Harbor Trailer/RV parking is available within walking distance and overnight parking for these larger vehicles may be arranged in advance if necessary.

Breakfast and Snacks

Breakfast is served between 8:00am – 9:00am. Knowing Bar Harbor has many popular early morning adventures, a “breakfast to go” is happily arranged for those who cannot make it to the dining room during breakfast hours.

Aysgarth Station’s full breakfast starts with a fruit dish and a selection of homemade pastry/sweetbread choices followed by the daily entrée. As innkeeper and Chef Jane utilizes fresh, seasonal and Maine sourced foodstuffs, and is happy to accommodate dietary needs and preferences, there is no set menu rotation here. Look for anything from Aebleskivers or Lemon Ricotta Chestnut Pancakes with Mixed Berry Compote to an Open Face Egg Sandwich on Cranberry Focaccia with homemade Bacon and Carrot Jam or a savory French Toast. For those who prefer, eggs-to-order, cereals, granola, muesli, yogurt, juice and toast are always available on the buffet or by request.

With the increasing complexity of dietary requirements, innkeepers at Aysgarth Station may ask a few times in advance of their guests’ arrival to make sure that they can not only accommodate any dietary restrictions, but also to knock their socks off with special offerings.  An accomplished foodie adventurer, Chef Jane has a good stock of gluten free, celiac, and vegetarian / vegan options and even some Paleo and Raw experiences too.

Aysgarth Station is a proud supporter and committed consumer of local and Maine producers, businesses and clean food. Innkeeper and breakfast chef, Jane, sources most the eggs, cheese and meat products used at the B&B, along with much of the fresh items used through Crown ‘O Maine Organic Co-op which distributes Maine small farms harvests to the local businesses that use Maine ingredients. Native Maine, a Westbrook, ME based food Distribution Company that also sources Maine and New England products and Island Farm and Farm Share products, are used when available too.  Even more local, homegrown herbs found at breakfast and snacks come right from the B&B’s own porch!

There’s a careful and well-honed focus on good food at Aysgarth Station, and the majority of the food is scratch made right at the B&B, to control quality and freshness.

Inn History   

Aysgarth Station B&B was originally built as a single-family home in 1895, and while the inn has had many owners and physical restructuring over the years (after 2 roof raisings, it has grown in stature!), each owner has left his or her own mark on the house. Early historical information before the late 1940s is sketchy. Innkeepers know that the home was a replacement for another house that burned in the fire of 1947. A current neighbors’ grandparents purchased the house, and provided room and board for the Greyhound bus drivers who came to the island. Thus, was the beginnings of the B&B’s hospitality heritage.  

A number of previous owners still live on Mount Desert Island. After being turned into a B&B, it was the Hatfield Inn originally.  Present innkeepers Jane and Steve purchased what was then the Hatfield Inn in 2004, renamed it to Aysgarth Station, and filled it with creative cuisine and books from around the world for guests to enjoy.

Your Innkeepers: Jane Holland and Steve Cornell

Steve was born in Michigan and while he grew up there, by high school it was often simply a home base for his many motorcycle adventures, including the first visit he made to Acadia National Park. What started out as a goal to ride to every National Park with his brother, ended up as a deep appreciation for the area and a move to the island, after a visit in 1987. Steve has a degree in Film and Communications from Grand Valley State University and various technical degrees and certifications in the telecom and computer fields.

Jane is a Hospitality and Tourism graduate from University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, and worked for premier event companies, catering events including international sporting events, exhibitions, Government/ Military and Royal functions.  She eventually went to work the London Waldorf Hotel. She came to the United States to accept a job at a five-diamond luxury hotel attached to the city conference center in Grand Rapids MI, where Steve was Associate Director of Convention Services. While Steve eventually changed his career focus to Information Technology, Jane continued with hospitality primarily focused on events and catering.  Their working relationship eventually resulted in a romance and then marriage.

A honeymoon in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park granted Jane the chance to develop a shared love for the area, and a desire to move to Downeast Maine. Eventually Jane and Steve purchased a home in Bar Harbor in 1999. A specialty in hospitality and food has been the founding principle that underlies Aysgarth Station B&B. Jane and Steve love the Bar Harbor area and Acadia National Park, but even with such a beautiful place to live, they still love to travel, albeit in the off-season. Visiting other national parks is still a high priority, as well as family spread out across the world. Both ride motorcycles, and travel by bike is always a treat.

In addition to co-owning Aysgarth Station with his wife Jane, Steve also works for the town of Bar Harbor in the technology field. If you see Steve in a Police vehicle, don’t assume he’s in big trouble, he’s probably just working!
