Create your own holiday itinerary of Inns Along the Coast

Who says summer and fall are the only time to visit the Maine Coast?  Plan things right, and you might just be able to create a holiday tour of all our inns.  Since many of the holiday events take place at the beginning of the holiday season, plan to create an itinerary of holiday happenings in each of the Maine coastal communities where Inns Along the Coast are found.

Let’s take a look at the holiday happenings occurring along the Coast of Maine.

Southern Maine/Kennebunkport

The 36th Annual Christmas Prelude takes place in Kennebunkport, Maine, November 30-December 10, 2017. Named the #2 Christmas town in the USA by HGTV, Kennebunkport’s two-week holiday festival includes everything from tree lightings and Santa arrivals by boat to hat and pooch parades. Of course, there are also ice bars, bonfires and plenty of holiday spirits too.

While there are hundreds of events on the schedule, two of the events are focused on inns, including the Captain Jefferds Inn.  On Sunday, December 3, from 1:00-3:00pm, the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport will open their doors for a holiday open house.  Tour inns dressed in all their holiday finery and enjoy refreshments at each inn. Then on Saturday, December 9, join the Walk to Bethlehem, a candlelight procession with Mary and Joseph stopping at three inns, including the Captain Jefferds Inn, and ending at the manger for hymns and carols followed by refreshments.

Book your stay at the Captain Jefferds Inn soon, and be right in the heart of the holiday happiness.

Freeport

Filled with outlets and great shops, Freeport is hopping throughout the holidays. Visit any time during the holiday season and you can’t go wrong, but Sparkle Celebration weekend is a particularly colorful time to visit the Brewster House B&B.  December 1-3, 2017 marks Freeport’s Sparkle Celebration this year.  While the schedule is filled with shopping, holiday cheer and Freeport’s famous talking Christmas tree, the highlight of the weekend is the Parade of Lights, on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 7:00pm.

Walk to many of the events from the Brewster House Inn.  Then after a full day of holiday shopping and celebrating, return to the inn to sample one of the many craft brews on tap here. Simply visit Brewster House B&B online to view availability, then book soon for this popular weekend.  Remember, though, anytime during the holiday season is a great time to visit Brewster House B&B, as the famous outlets are an easy stroll from the inn.

Newcastle

Few New England towns are as quaint and quintessentially New England during the holidays as Newcastle and adjacent Damariscotta, where the harbors meet the towns and holiday decorations are classic and tasteful, and home to the Newcastle Inn. Yet, those in search of incredible holiday displays will find one nearby at Gardens Aglow in the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden, where you’ll see gardens in a whole new light! From November 17 to December 31, 2017, visit this special botanical garden where 500,000 energy efficient LED lights decorate the central gardens and buildings. It’s a spectacle to behold, and a highlight of Boothbay’s Festival of Lights.

All this light magic is less than a 15-minute drive from the Newcastle Inn.  Book your holiday stay any time over the six weeks Gardens Aglow is open, and spend some time shopping in the unique local shops too.  Return to the inn for a hot toddy in the Newcastle Inn’s pub and complete the ongoing puzzle you’ll find in the living room.

Rockland

Visit Rockland, Maine over Thanksgiving weekend and not only will you enjoy your fill of turkey, but you can also take part in the annual Festival of Lights, featuring the world-famous lobster trap Christmas tree and the Festival of Lights parade. Home to Berry Manor Inn, LimeRock Inn and Granite Inn, all three are within an easy stroll of the Festival of Lights events.

One of the highlights of this weekend is the Holiday House Tour including all three of the Inns Along the Coast members here.  Tour these special inns and view the gorgeous Victorian decorations at the Berry Manor Inn, the extraordinary nutcracker collection at the LimeRock Inn and the chic contemporary holiday décor at the Granite Inn.  You’re sure to go home with ideas for decorating your own home.  It’s all topped off with a tree auction at the Rockland Library; the event benefits Friends of Rockland Library.  Take advantage of the Festival of Lights package honored at all three inns.

Camden

Christmas by the Sea is a December tradition in Camden, Lincolnville and Rockport, Maine celebrated this year December 1-3, 2017. The schedule of events includes carriage rides through downtown, a holiday parade, stores open late with ongoing sales, cookie decorating, a tree-lighting in Harbor Park, carolers, Santa Claus, and many craft shows, holiday fairs and activities throughout three communities. This is the perfect time for a holiday stay at Hawthorn Inn, just steps away from all the holiday action.

Start the day right with a beautifully handcrafted breakfast, offered by innkeepers, Ted and Lisa.  Then stroll through Camden’s eclectic shops while taking in a full schedule of holiday events over the weekend.  You can book online or call the Hawthorn Inn to enjoy your holiday getaway by the sea.

Bar Harbor

Mark your calendar for December 1, 2017 and Bar Harbor’s one-day Village Holidays and Midnight Madness Sale.  The evening begins at 4:30pm on the Village Green in downtown Bar Harbor with carolers and hot cocoa. Then, join us in welcoming Santa Claus to the Village Green at 5pm. From there, follow Santa and the carolers down to the MDI YMCA for family activities and crafts and your chance to visit with Santa, from 5:30-6:30pm. Activities and crafts provided by the MDI YMCA and Summer Festival of the Arts. It’s all walking distance from Saltair Inn Waterfront B&B and Aysgarth Station B&B.

Forget Black Friday’s rise-and-shine at o-dark-hundred. The Midnight Madness Sale is for night owls. It begins at 8:00pm. Make a night of it with dinner at one of Bar Harbor's many restaurants before shopping the generous discounts and sales from participating businesses. Then, bring your receipts down to the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center on the corner of Main and Cottage Streets to enter to win the midnight raffle drawing. Every receipt from a participating location will be good for one entry into the drawing for 2 round-trip tickets from Bar Harbor to Boston on Cape Air. The more you shop the better chances you'll have to win!

Be sure to book a stay where you can walk to all the action, then after you’ve literally shopped until you’ve dropped, stroll back to Saltair Inn.   Aysgarth Station B&B will be closed during this time, but opens again in January for winter stays and getaways.  You can book your stay online or call for reservations.

There you have it; a whirlwind holiday itinerary for Inns along the Coast of Maine in all their Christmas glory.  Wouldn't you love to see it in person?  Contact your favorite inn and book your holiday getaway soon.
